Marjorie was born and raised in Yukon, Oklahoma and spent her youth attending Yukon public schools, graduating from Yukon High School in 1947 as valedictorian. After high school Marjorie attended Monticello Girls School in Illinois before returning home to attend the University of Oklahoma where she earned a sociology degree in 1951. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority at OU. She worked at the family's Yukon Mill with her dad and Kroutil family during her school years. She attended Yukon First Christian Church for many years and played the piano. During her marriage to first husband, Carl A. Wallace, she moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and later to New Providence, NJ, fostering a number of children while having her own family and working in social work. In 1971, after her divorce, she returned to Yukon. She then worked at the Yukon National Bank. In 1974, Marjorie married James F. Downing in Yukon and they enjoyed nearly 40 years of marriage. During these years she worked for Oklahoma Department of Human Services while also traveling, attending OU football games, golfing at Falconhead, and enjoying their time together with many friends and family.

Marjorie enjoyed her long-time relationship with her very special friends in The Knitters of Yukon. They not only knitted, but also made a number of girls trips to Colorado as well as many lunches and laughs together for many decades. In various chapters of her life, Marjorie also enjoyed needlepoint, crossword puzzles, home decorating, bridge, Yukon Art League and every opportunity to get dressed up.
